Founder & Executive Director
John Hurlbut has been serving in various ministry roles for 16 years in a variety of church and para-church ministries. John has a degree in Communication Studies from UNT ('02); a Graduate Certificate in Youth Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary ('06); and a Master of Theology (Th. M. '10) from Dallas Theological Seminary. In January of 2010, John started JHMinistries, a nonprofit 501c3 organization with seeks to grow organic leadership 3 main ways: 1) by seeking to partner together with local pastors and community leaders to provide strategic training and development to organizatonal leaders in their respective volunteer or vocational settings 2) through a neighborhood Bible Study 3) through Project Argentina - which is establishing a sustainable organic finca in Mendoza, Argentina that has a Bible School and Orphanage along with a church planting residency program.
John is passionate about teaching, training, preaching and works to instill servant leadership qualities by developing fully functioning servants of Christ. While on staff with various churches and ministries, John has held such positions as Student and College Pastor, Worship Pastor, Guest Teacher/Preacher, and Overseas Missionary. John is also a Texas Certified Teacher in a variety of subjects, and presently investing into students as a professional educator. John is married to his college sweetheart, Amanda, (who is pursuing her Ph.D. in Education Curriculum and Instruction) and together they have a daughter named Adeleine. They live in Stonebridge Ranch in McKinney, TX. Other interests that John enjoys are playing/coaching soccer, sailing, photography, landscape design, backpacking, snowboarding, fly fishing, music, and SCUBA diving.
Secretary & Director
Born and raised in the Dallas area, Matt has been involved in various ministries since 1998. Starting with Campus Crusade Christ, Matt travelled to Estonia for several weeks to work with local churches in outreach to the community. During his time at the University of North Texas, he served as a college leader through a local church. After graduating UNT with a degree in Communication Studies ('02), Matt lived and worked at Heartlight, a live-in residential youth ministry in Hallsville, TX, where he mentored at-risk teens. Here, Matt ministered to the families of the teens, collaboratted with other staff, and communicated with the program director to ensure that effective life change was taking place. It was also at Heartlight where Matt met his wife Carrie, who was also on staff. Since then, Matt has worked in various positions such as teaching, business management, and college student advisor, which is the position he currently holds.
Matt and Carrie live in Irving and serve at First Baptist Church Irving as leaders of an 18-25 year old small group. Matt is also enrolled at Southwestern Theological Seminary working toward a M.A. degree in Christian Education. Some of Matt's hobbies include reading, hiking, running, and taking walks with Carrie and thier dog, Titus. Matt has a heart for the small group method of discipleship as it relates to drawing others closer to Jesus Christ through the context of real spiritual community.
Treasurer & Director
Derek Martin is a native Texan who has called the Dallas area home since birth. He graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in Business Finance in the spring of 2000. From there he worked at Dallas based Crow Holdings, a privately owned real estate investment company, providing analytical support, then transitioning into the responsibility of acquisitions and asset management for their hotel portfolio. Currently, he is working with Davidson Hotels and Resorts, primarily working on asset management for the company's current investments.
Derek married Ashley, his college sweetheart, in July of 2001, and together they have three boys; Cole (2005), Beckett (2007), and Bryson (2010). Derek and his family are members of Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco, TX. He is an avid sports fan and follows all of the local sports teams, leaving no offseason in the Martin household. Other interests include cooking, reading, and spending time in the outdoors.
Stephen Palmer has over 12 years of expereince in software development and information systems, with a diverse skillset in programming, database design and management, IT infrastructure management, project management, and team leadership.
From October 1999 through July 2010, Stephen served at Gearbox Software thorugh progressive responsibilities as a Programmer, IT Director, Senior Producer, and Executive Producer. Stephen's leadership and management experience was instrumental in building the company from a small start up of less than a dozen employees to one of the leading independant game development studios in the world, with sales of over 400 million. Since leaving Gearbox Software, he has been working with his family on a start up business, as well as pursuing other entreprenurial opportunities in software and game development.
Stephen lives in Allen, TX with his wife and daughter and are members of The Village church based in Highland Village, TX.
Larry Hurlbut is the father of John Hurlbut, and has over 40 years of professional experience in all phases of architecture, planning, and urban design. Larry has a B. ARCH from the University of Minnesota, and a M. ARCH from UCLA. He is a registered architect in the state of Texas. He has also held various positions of leadership and influence within the local Lutheran churches he has attended.
As an architect, Larry has worked with a number of national and internationally known architectural firms on a wide variety of projects including luxury high rise residential, heigh end hospitality, commercial office, healthcare office, as well as other building types. He also served in the public sector as Director of Planning for the Minneapolis Housing Authority.
Most recently, Larry was an Associate with RTKL Inc., a large international architectural firm. He served as the project manager/project architect for the historic renovation of Republic Center, a 35 story building in downtown Dallas which is on the Historic Register; a 30 story luxury apartment building in Austin, Teas; and a medical office building in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He also managed the design development phase for a 45 story luxury apartment building in Jakarta, Indonesia.
During his career as an architect, Larry has also served in numerous positions of leadership in the Lutheran churches he has attended. He served on the Board of Elders, Church Council and School Board at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Wayzata, MN (1975-1981). At Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Dallas, TX, he served as Chairman of the Board of Elders, Chairman of the Pastoral Call Committee and the Church Council (1981-1988).
As a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Carrollton, TX since 1988, Larry has served in the capacity as a Pastor's Prayer Partner, Board of Elders, Prayer Ministry, Stephen's Ministry, and several building committees. He is currently a member of the Adult Education Committee, an usher, and assists with hospital visitation. He also facilitates two weekly Christian World View classes for adults.
